Glass ionomer (or Ketac) fillings are our first choice for primary (deciduous) teeth. Additionally, we use them on children because of how well they bond to the tooth structure and how much fluoride they release. However, there may be times when different fillings are necessary.
Pulpotomies are necessary when tooth decay has reached the pulp (nerve tissue) of a milky tooth. In this procedure, the dentist for children will place a medication in the chamber portion of the tooth (not the canals). This medication both reduces inflammation and sterilizes the area, allowing the tooth to remain in place until it naturally falls out. As a result, the tooth acts as a space-maintainer, decreasing the risk of crowding and misalignment.
Pulpectomies, or paediatric root canals, involve opening the tooth and removing the pulp and nerve tissue (the chambers and canals). When the time comes for the tooth to fall out naturally, a medicated root canal dressing will have been applied in preparation. Aroma Dental Clinic, like many other dental clinics for kids, offers this service for infected nerve tissue.
If the cavity or decay in your child’s baby tooth is particularly severe, our paediatric dental specialist may suggest placing a crown over the tooth instead of a filling. The crown, which can be metal or tooth-colored, fits over the tooth and protects the surface from decay and damage until the permanent tooth comes in.
